October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Dr. Kay Deeming from our Family Medicine team, shares just how important it is to have regular breast health examinations:
–>Statistics now show the lifetime risk for breast cancer is one in every eight women.
–>The risk is slightly higher in women who have a first degree relative with breast cancer diagnosed before her menopause.
–>Research shows early detection of breast cancer by breast examination and sonomammography has a better prognostic outcome.
–>Men also need to be aware of the significance of finding any lump in their breast tissue and seek urgent medical advice.
Use this month as a reminder to get up to date with preventative health checks. Your family doctor is able to do a thorough breast examination and arrange appropriate investigations for you.
